Simone Rocha puts her whole self into her work

The designer discusses mastering her own voice, the art of collaboration and the importance of slowing down.

LAST DECEMBER saw the return of the Fashion Awards, the British Fashion Council's annual glittering celebration of the past 12 months, which recognises excellence in the industry and raises huge sums of money for emerging talent. Up for one of the biggest awards of the night, Womenswear Designer of the Year, was the Irish powerhouse Simone Rocha, who arguably has one of the most recognisable design signatures in fashion today – known as she is for her unapologetically feminine, romantic pieces that speak to the modern woman (and now, the modern man too). Off the back of numerous successful collaborations and growing responsibilities within her own business, Rocha reflects on how she has mastered her own voice, and why this has been key to her success.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1636628353282-0'); });

"I think what is really important is that your brand identity has to genuinely be a part of you – it's an extension of you and your world – so putting it out there has to feel really natural," Rocha tells me, of how she's managed to build a brand that has such a strong sense of herself. "I think what gives it its power is that people can identify with you personally and I think all of that comes from a very specific identity. For me, that's what it's all about each season; [the designs are] evolving, sometimes you're moving forward, sometimes you are regressing, but it's all a language that feels very true to me."

Rocha says that, while she admires so many other London-based designers, she never lets their voice come into her dialogue – getting distracted by what others are doing is not something she worries about when her work is so personal to her.

CREATING new collections is actually the thing that gives me the ENERGY to KEEP PUSHING MYSELF

"My collections are always an extension of myself and this ethos of femininity, of modernity, and what that looks like today in reality. That is always on my mind when it comes to the underbelly of the collections," she explains. Indeed, there are few designers who have such a strong sense of what their brand is, and who their customer is, as Rocha does – and this is something that is reflected on each and every season, from the starting point of each collection through to execution and styling, whether commenting on love and romance or on Irish harvest traditions.

980

"Creating new collections is actually the thing that gives me the energy to keep pushing myself and moving forward with new ideas," she says when I ask her about the relentless fashion cycle (which currently sees her create both men's and women's collections twice a year, on top of various collaborative projects). "I think that is healthy, although it definitely can be tiring, but the day you struggle with new ideas is probably the day that the party is over because, while so much of the rest of it is really challenging, creating is the bit that should make you feel good, I believe."

It is really important for your BRAND IDENTITY to GENUINELY be a PART of YOU

As her brand has grown more and more recognisable, Rocha has found herself in high demand from other labels. Over the years, she has collaborated with Moncler's Genius line several times (in fact, she was part of the inaugural project), she created a headline-making sell-out collection for H&M, is currently working with Crocs, and is the latest designer to be chosen by Jean Paul Gaultier to create a couture collection for his house (which we will see early next year). Creative collaboration, it seems, is something she enjoys.

980
SIMONE ROCHA

"It's a really good chance to stretch your mind in other directions," she says. "When I take on a collaboration, I always want it to be something where I can take my expertise to something new. Maybe that means doing something super high level with Moncler or perhaps super playful with Crocs, creating something en masse with H&M – which was like night and day compared with running an independent label – or really understanding a new way of working with Jean Paul Gaultier. Collaboration is just all about learning."

The upcoming collection with Gaultier will see her design couture for the very first time as she plays guest designer for the iconic brand. She follows in the footsteps of names such as Julien Dossena of Paco Rabanne and Olivier Rousteing of Balmain – and it will see Rocha put her spin on the label, as well as learn a completely new skill.

"What I have really learnt from the haute couture experience is to slow down, which has been amazing because ready-to-wear is such a fast pace. It's big collections – and I do women's and men's – so I am going 100 miles a minute. What has been amazing about doing haute couture is the slow down and the reset, physically speed-wise, because obviously it is all done by hand, but then also mentally to reset design-wise has been incredible. I have been forced to take a step back and consider each garment internally, externally, really explore it, because haute couture is about specific fits. That interaction with the body has been an incredibly stimulating experience."

We will have to wait a few more months to see what Rocha has in store for Gaultier, but what we do know is that the designer's instantly recognisable touches will be all over it. In a world currently obsessed with the enduring appeal of quiet luxury but always moving fast with trends, Rocha's perspective is unique and refreshing; truly great fashion – that which takes time to create and lasts a lifetime – is what she is all about designing. Through her work, we see that timeless fashion does not have to be quiet – it can be bold, loud and unapologetically feminine.

TIMELESS FASHION is about ALWAYS LOVING that piece – NO MATTER WHAT it is

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1636628353292-0'); });

"For me, timeless fashion is about always loving it – no matter what it is," she says. "It is always feeling connected to it – no matter what the season, what the weather – it just feels personally connected to you. It could be something that you wear all the time, or it could be something that you preserve, that you always come back and revisit – I think that's what is truly timeless to me."

Steve Burton, who played Navy SEAL Harris Michaels on Days of Our Lives, is leaving the role after just one year.

The 53-year-old made the announcement himself, in a video uploaded to the Daily Drama's YouTube page.

"Wow! Well, I just shot my final scenes here on 'Days of Our Lives,' and I just want to say, thank you so much to the cast, to the crew. It's been amazing," he shared as he walked down the studio halls.

"I can't believe it's been a year already! So, thank you so much to the fans.

"I'm always so full of gratitude. So thank you."

Although he didn't go into specifics as to why he left the show, Steve ended the video by teasing a new direction.

"Stay tuned," Steve said, pointing to the camera.

Fans online hope that means he could be coming back to his old stomping grounds, on sister soap General Hospital.

"Does this mean that you might be coming back to GH??" one person begged to know. "The show definitely needs you and I think they know that!"

A second echoed: "Come back to GH. We miss you a lot."

While a third begged: "Please come back to GH, I stopped watching it the day you left."

FAN FAVORITE

Steve played Jason Morgan on General Hospital, and quickly became a fan favorite after making his debut in 1991.

However, his character was ultimately killed off in November 2021.

The decision to kill his character came after Steve Burton announced he was fired over the show's Covid-19 vaccine mandates.

Alongside an Instagram video explaining why he'd been fired, Burton wrote "Hey! I wanted you to hear it from me. I love and appreciate all of you!"

"I wanted you to hear it from me personally." he said in the video.

"Unfortunately, General Hospital has let me go because of the vaccine mandate. I did apply for my medical and religious exemptions, and both of those were denied. Which, you know, hurts. But this is also about personal freedom to me."

The vaccine mandate for Zone A at General Hospital went into effect on November 1, 2021. Zone A includes those present on set when the actors aren't wearing masks, and the actors themselves.

Steve reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 in August of that year.

He is also known for his role as Dylan McAvoy on The Young and the Restless.

MESSY DIVORCE

Less than a year later, Steve would suffer another setback when filed for divorce from his wife, following a wild cheating scandal.

He had been married to Sheree Gustin since January of 1999, and the two share three children.

Sheree was pregnant again at the time of their split, but Steve slammed that it wasn't his baby.

"I wanted to clear something up," he began in another Instagram message, "Sheree and I are separated.

"She recently announced that she's expecting her fourth child. The child is not mine."

"We are still co-parenting our three beautiful kids."

"We would appreciate privacy at this time. Much luv, Steve."

The Bachelorette star changed her name on social media[/caption]

Rachel, 38, sent a clear message on social media in the wake of her unexpected divorce, however.

The Bachelorette star removed her husband Bryan's last name from her Instagram profile.

Fans were quick to take notice of the subtle change.

A screengrab of her Instagram page was posted to a Bachelor Nation online forum, where commenters weighed in.

The original poster wrote simply: "Rachel removed 'Abasolo' from her last name today."

People in the comments were split about how they felt about the end of the relationship.

One person wrote: "I'm really sad for them both. The end of a relationship doesn't mean failure in any way, but it certainly is a loss no matter what the reasons and my heart goes out to them."

"As someone who watched her season years later, I always believed she should've picked peter [Kraus]. although he's a bit messy now, I thought they were the perfect twoooo. their breakup is one of the only breakups that had me sobbing lolll. But regardless, so happy for her for leaving that man. She deserves the world!" A second person reacted.

A third critic wrote: "Always knew he was a sleaze bag. Bryan always gave those vibes even on the show."

One person defended Bryan, writing: "I love Rachel but why does everyone have to attack Brian [sic] just because they're getting divorced. We know nothing about their relationship because they're a private couple and we know nothing about Brian [sic].

"Just because he liked or followed something on instagram doesn't mean ANYTHING. I'm sick of this sub going full send over someone liking an instagram post. I can guarantee you Becca [Kufrin] did not divorce garret [Yrigoyen] for his racist instagram history and I know gabby didn't break up with what's his face for doing black face so why does this sub care so much ? This sub has a serious hive-mentality."

"Folks maybe annoyed that he checked off spousal support and he perhaps "blind-sighted" her too. Maybe the truth will be revealed? It's their business," someone else suggested.

Another Bachelor fan agreed, writing: "It's definitely the spousal support more than anything else that convinces me he's a jerk."

IT'S OVER

Bryan filed for divorce from Rachel on Tuesday, listing the official date of separation as December 31, 2023.

The chiropractor requested spousal support after choosing to end the marriage due to irreconcilable differences, The Blast reported.

Bryan claimed that their Los Angeles, California, home should be viewed as community property.

After submitting the documents, Bryan took to Instagram on Tuesday to let his followers know that he had decided to end his marriage.

In a text post, the Florida native wrote: "If you've been following me for a while, you know I don't like to put my personal affairs on social media and like to keep a safe space for our family.

"Many of you know me as a chiropractor, and also as a husband, my proudest role so far.

"After more than 4 years of marriage, Rachel and I have made the difficult decision to part ways and start anew."

He concluded: "My parents have been married forever and I'm a family man, but sometimes loving yourself and your partner means you must let go."

Bryan asked fans to respect his and Rachel's space as they navigate this difficult time.

Rachel, for her part, posted a video compilation to her Instagram feed over the weekend, which sparked questions from fans about the status of her relationship.

After noticing that she and Bryan hadn't shared much together on social media recently, she wrote in her caption that 2023 was "definitely one of the hardest years of her life."

Rachel did not immediately address the divorce on social media.

ALL ABOUT RACHEL

The Texas native made history as the first Black Bachelorette after appearing on Nick Viall's season of The Bachelor and winning the favor of viewers.

She remains a fixture in the Bachelor franchise while dabbling in other aspects of the entertainment business.

Rachel works as a correspondent for Extra TV.

Before starting her career in media, she worked as a lawyer at Cooper & Scully in Dallas, Texas.

She focused heavily on civil defense litigation.

Rachel currently hosts the Higher Learning with Van Lathan and Rachel Lindsay podcast, during which they talk about popular topics in Black culture.

The TV personality also released two books since appearing on The Bachelorette, including a fiction novel called Real Love, and a collection of essays titled Miss Me With That: Hot Takes, Helpful Tidbits, and a Few Hard Truths.

The shape of things to come

After walking the runways of London, Sydney, Copenhagen and Milan in 2023, there's no stopping Australian curve model Sophia Brennan.

WHEN SOPHIA BRENNAN opened the Henne show at Afterpay Australian Fashion Week (AAFW) 2023, it felt like the needle had finally moved on the issue of curve models in this country. Looking ultra-glamorous in a pair of aviators and a floor-length tan vegan leather coat over a sheer, full-length tube dress, Brennan's look was the opening statement of the sophomore AAFW show of Henne designer Nadia Bartel. And, remarkably, this was not a so-called 'size-inclusive' fashion brand that caters up to a size 26, as showcased at AAFW's Curve Edit show in 2022. Rather, this was a mainstream brand designed by a celebrity that doesn't even offer extended sizing.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1636628353282-0'); });

"People said in the media [including The Sydney Morning Herald] that they thought it was tokenistic. But, for me, that experience was anything but tokenistic; it was actually very authentic," says Brennan, who's a size 16. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the average dress size of the Australian woman is 16-18. To clarify, that is five-six sizes larger than that of the average (aka 'straight-sized') runway model, who wears a size six to eight, with runway samples usually only ever made in those sizes. Henne — which offers up to a size 16 in its ranges — tells BAZAAR it sampled several of this show's key looks in both an 8 and a 16.

Despite the inroads made on international runways during the past three years by curve model pioneers such as Ashley Graham, Paloma Elsesser, Precious Lee, Tess Holliday and Jill Kortleve, the majority of runway models remain straight-sized. After critics slammed the Melbourne Fashion Festival in March for failing to include models over a size 14, AAFW had more curve models on its 2023 runways than ever before, including Cassaerea Jesus, Mia Brennan, Basjia Almaan and Bell Campbell, who were integrated into the regular shows.

"As bigger models, we don't want [to be part of] an outlandish statement about body diversity anymore. We just want to be included and given the same opportunities as our straight-sized peers," says Brennan, who moved to London in late 2022 and now models under the professional name of Sophia Brenn. "Henne gave me that opportunity and they didn't second-guess it, like, 'Oh, maybe we shouldn't have her open. Maybe we should put her in the middle somewhere.' It was like, 'Oh, this looks fab on you. Great. That's the first look. Done.'"

All up, Brennan walked in seven AAFW 2023 shows. Three months earlier, she'd made her London Fashion Week debut walking for London-based Brazilian size-inclusive designer Karoline Vitto in the event's Fashion East emerging designer showcase. Then, in August, she walked for Ganni at Copenhagen Fashion Week, and in September, for Karoline Vitto again, this time at Milan Fashion Week for Vitto's Spring 2024 show, which was sponsored under the 'Supported by Dolce & Gabbana' initiative.

"What happened this year has been beyond my dreams," says Brennan, who's now walked alongside some of her curve-model idols. "Meeting Paloma Elsesser at Ganni — that was incredible. And in Milan when I walked for Karoline Vitto, Ashley Graham opened the show, and I came out second behind her. That was such a huge moment for me, and I really had to pinch myself".

On Elsesser and Graham, she adds: "They are my queens. They are amazing women and they've lit a little fire in my belly. I think it takes so much courage to be [among] the first and to be navigating a space that has historically been so close-minded. They've provided the references for creatives to see that we can be shot and seen through a fashion lens and look fierce doing it. Also, the more runways they walk, the more sample sizes are created to give to up-and-coming curve girlies to be shot for editorial."

2048
SYLWIA SZYPLIK

Long before Brennan started grappling with the size police of the fashion industry, she had to contend with the equally draconian aesthetic gatekeepers of the dance world, where thin has always been in and eating disorders are rife. According to a 2014 study published in the European Eating Disorders Review, dancers are three times more likely than the general population to suffer from an eating disorder.

"There are a lot of mirrors that I had in the performing arts industry that I [now] have in fashion," says Brennan, who was born and raised in Sydney and studied hip hop, jazz and musical theatre. She gained an Advanced Diploma in Performing Arts from Sydney's ED5International academy and later worked for ED5 as a choreographer. "I struggled as a curvier dancer to get work, so I fell in love with choreography and the creativity behind dance and also mentoring younger performing artists," she says.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1636628353292-0'); });

In 2017, she entered an online competition run by Australian curve-model specialist agency Bella Management. Founded by Chelsea Bonner, Bella Management launched the career of Robyn Lawley, to date Australia's most successful curve model.

The Melbourne Fashion Festival was not the only runway showcase to receive criticism of late. Despite the rise of body diversity on international runways in recent years, The New York Post proclaimed in late 2022: "Bye-bye booty: Heroin chic is back". In March, in response to the models of the Fall 2023 show season, Nylon magazine suggested "the industry's 'body positive reckoning' was always performative, and the most recent runway season confirmed it".

"I was on the ground at London Fashion Week castings with many other peers and I'd be lying if I said the result wasn't deflating," says Brennan, who's represented by Models 1 in London and IMG in Australia. "But it wasn't for a lack of options. We were there, we were working the castings. I don't buy into that [argument] – that our bodies were just trending for a season or two. I think that's a ridiculous statement. When it comes to fashion weeks, the issue is that everything is so last minute. Size diversity needs to not be an afterthought. For me, fashion is most exciting when it offers a different perspective and not when it's always the same."

Her dream jobs? Walking for Alexander McQueen at Paris Fashion Week. Shooting a campaign for New York fashion label Khaite. And nabbing a fragrance campaign, where she could deploy her dance skills. "Curve models are not going anywhere" she says. "We're here to stay."

Jeanne Damas is a fashion icon of our time. With her sartorial elegance and unmistakeable grace, it's no wonder the French beauty has amassed over one million Instagram fans.

Damas started her career as a fashion blogger, documenting her daily outfits and vivacious life in Paris with "It" friends, including that of designer Simon Porte Jacquemus. She then moved to Tumblr, where she started sharing her film photography, sparking an aspirational lifestyle among followers and fashion. In 2015, Gucci took notice and named her their 2015 fashion ambassador.

Just a year later, at the age of 25, Jeanne launched Rouje, the globally recognised brand for which she is now Creative Director. What started as a direct-to-consumer fashion brand selling via Instagram to her followers, is now a fully-fledged operation that Jeanne wishes to eventually develop into a fashion house. Having always been inspired by the women in her life, she says the size-inclusive Rouje is a brand for women, by women — obvious in its name.

Rouje (a red shade of lipstick with the J standing for Jeanne), merges elegant Parisienne basics such as figure-hugging floral dresses and the perfect denim fit, with playful prints and oversized check blazers. Mix this with Jeanne's effortless je ne sais quoi and you have a beautiful brand destined for success.

Before her busy designer days start though, you might find Jeanne at Le Carillon, her favourite breakfast spot on Rue Alibert enjoying a classic croissant and coffee. It's Paris, the city she was born and raised in and home of Rouje headquarters, where Damas finds so much of her inspiration. But, New York is where she feels most "enriched" — a perfect fit for her fourth bricks and mortar store. Featuring a dreamy life size mural by her good friend Nina Koltchitskaia, the Broome St store is like a slice of Paris, in Soho, New York. Below, we speak with Jeanne about French girl chic, Margot Robbie and why New York is one of her favourite cities in the world.

Harper's BAZAAR: Do you remember the first moment where you fell in love with fashion?

My mother was always very stylish when I grew up, a very strong and feminine woman. I was very proud of her when she came to pick me up from school, with her allure, her curly blonde hair, wrap dresses and high heels. She would also style the dresses from my sister and me. Lots of corduroy and lace. She still is an inspiration to me when it comes to fashion and I'm happy to see that she is wearing Rouje every day.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1636628353292-0'); });

What style of dresses did your mother wear when you were growing up?

She was always very feminine, dresses with flowers prints, tight on the waste. But she also wore more special looks like a Westwood buster which she wore over a tight turtleneck.

What goes through your mind when you are sitting down to conceptualise a new collection?

I always imagine how to tell stories with the Rouje collections. The feeling a woman has wearing Rouje is very important. With Rouje, I like that you see the woman before her outfit. I want them to feel empowered and comfortable. A sense of assumed femininity. The starting point can be an inspiration from a movie or the allure of a woman I saw passing by.

With ROUJE, I like that you SEE the WOMAN before her OUTFIT.

Congratulations on the opening of your beautiful store in New York, we cannot wait to visit! Why New York?

New York has always been a city in which I found a lot of inspiration. Its energy and freedom is very enriching. I love watching the people in the street and what they wear. People can wear the craziest outfits and it's totally normal there! The first time I saw women wear slip dresses in the streets was there. I really like this self-confident attitude. To open a store in NYC was something I was planning since a long time, but then Covid happened, and we had to postpone the project. I'm very happy and proud that we have finally our store on Broome Street and that Rouje can be now a physical experience for our clients.

Where is your favourite spot in New York to be inspired?

My favourite thing to do in any city is to sit at a corner coffee shop and watch the people passing by. It's the best way to get a feeling of a city and spot trends. In NY I really like Dimes on Canal Street, they have the best matchas.

What do you envision guests to feel when they walk into any of your Rouje stores?

I want them to feel welcomed. To me Rouje has always been a lifestyle brand and the encounter with Rouje in the store is very important. We opened stores also in London, Bordeaux and a new one in Paris. They all have some elements in common but each one has its own personality. The NY store for example is quite big, a beautiful loft. To make it cosier, I've asked my friend the painter Nina Koltichskaya to create two murals to make this space really unique.

It's wonderful to see that Rouje is inclusive of a wide range of body types. What inspires you about creating fashion for the female body?

At Rouje we are women creating for women. It's part of our creative process that the women of my design team who have different ages and body types try on the prototypes to find the most flattering shapes.

What are some of your favourite pieces from the current Rouje collection?

This season we have some beautiful suede coats which I love, very '70s. I am also very happy with the new bags like the Frenchy or the Parigot. And my classic autumn uniform, a pair of jeans (these days the Germain) a small sweater, a man style jacket like our Jacques and a pair of Celeste ankle boots.

Our Aussie sweetheart Margot Robbie was seen at a press junket for Mary Queen of Scots in 2018 wearing your Gabin wrap dress. Was this a big moment for you? Do you have any Rouje muses you would love to see wearing your pieces?

This was amazing; I love Margot Robbie! We are lucky at Rouje that a lot of actresses like to wear our clothes. We even dressed Léa Seydoux in the last James Bond movie.

Tell us about some of the work you are doing for Women's Rights charities, such as La Maison Des Femmes?

I realised that when you have a brand you also have a voice. It's important for me to be able to support La Maison des Femmes, who is taking care of women victims of violence. The shelter is integrated into a hospital and provides medical, psychological, and legal help. We raise money by donating the proceeds of an upcycled piece every month to the hospice. And we also designed a capsule collection with 90s cult label Xuly.Bët this year for their benefit.

Do you have plans on coming to Australia and opening a store here soon? We hope so!

I would love to work on a project and visit Australia. Right now, there is nothing in the pipeline … but I like the idea.

The 53-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, reported TMZ.

No cause of death has been given at this time.

Several hours earlier, Angus had shared stories of him partying and playing music with his friends to his more than 52,000 Instagram followers.

The group could be seen singing and playing the guitar in the short clips.

Angus' father died from pancreatic cancer in 1989 and he soon inherited Paul's stake in John Paul Mitchell Systems and its schools.

He learned much of his craft from his famous father but also went to school to study hairstyling.

He worked in Hawaii for several years before opening the Angus Mitchell Salon in 2010.

Angus' company also had a male-focused line, Mitch, that he was heavily involved with.

He served as a model and spokesperson for the brand.

Angus won multiple awards for his work over the years, including the #1 Platform Artist from Be Magazine.

He also received three awards from the Alternative Hair Show, which raises money for leukemia research.

In a final Instagram post, Angus celebrated New Year's with a family photo.

The comments section is full of condolences with one person writing, "Heartbroken. Such an awesome, sweet, hilarious, generous man and family. I'm in disbelief."

"Rest In Peace Angus," read another comment. "Thoughts and prayers with his loved ones."

He is survived by his current wife, Mara, and his son, Dylan, whom he shared with his second wife, Sian.

Since 2016, PONANT has partnered with Ducasse Conseil — the catering centre of excellence run by DUCASSE Paris, which was itself founded by Alain Ducasse, one of the world's most celebrated chefs with nine Michelin stars to the three restaurants he currently helms in Monaco, Paris and London. As such, the dining experience aboard Le Ponant offers culinary delights of stellar quality.

The diamond of the ship's gastronomic offerings is fittingly Le Diamant, the panoramic restaurant situated on the Zéphyr Deck.
